All weapons were required to be thoroughly cleaned, test fired and a final clean within 24 hours before mounting an operation or a patrol. there was a firing range within the 5RAR lines where firing practice was frequently carried out by all platoons of the Battalion with a range of weapons to ensure that the diggers maintained competency.
