M113A1 Armoured Personnel Carrier

A vehicle of thirteen tons. A reliable US-made vehicle is also amphibious and carried a crew of two. the vehicle could carry and Australian infantry section of ten men in the rear. Its armourment was a machine gun or guns of .30 calibre or .50 calibre or a combination of both.
Often during operations infantry companies moved outside the range of our field guns. On those occasions Armoured Mortar Carriers (APCs fitted out with equipment to allow 81mm mortars to be fired from inside the carrier) moved a section of the 5 RAR Mortar Platoon to locations where they could support the company.
During Operation Sydney, they were used to transport 105 mm Howitzers of 103 Field Battery to bring them in range of 5RAR
