A Battery of the 1st/83rd arrived at Nui Dat in October 1966 To support Australian and New Zealand operations. The battery consisted of the M107 Gun (seen here) and the M110 203 mm Self-Propelled Howitzer. They gave 1ATF (1st Australian Task Force) invaluable support, particularly 'in depth' well beyond the limits of the 105 mm batteries.
Second Lieutenant Michael "Deaky" von Berg 5RAR's reconnaissance platoon commander often successfully employed and directed night artillery on enemy positions and movement through campfires and torchlight sightings.
