Luscombe Field Nui Dat

Luscombe Field

Luscombe Airfield was the airfield at Nui Dat, Phuoc Tuy Province, South Vietnam. The airfield was built by 1 Field Squadron, Royal Australian Engineers for the 1st Australian Task Force at Nui Dat. The airfield was opened on 5 December 1966 and named in honour of Captain Bryan Luscombe, who had been killed in action during the Korean War on 5 June 1952.
This view of Luscombe Field was taken looking west. 5RAR, (during both tours), were in the rubber trees to the right of the airstrip. The small flat roofed building in the foreground contained the stage for Luscombe Bowl where the troops were entertained by visiting singers and bands.

Part of the large feature to the left is the north-eastern face of the Nui Dinh hills colloquially called 'The Warbies' or Warburton Mountains so named after a 5RAR soldier, named Graham Warburton. Sadly, Pte. Graham Warburton was Killed in Action on the 1st of October 1966.
