HMAS Yarra escorting HMAS Sydney with soldiers of 5RAR aboard 1970

HMAS Yarra February 1970.

On 27 February 1970 5RAR departed Vung Tau on board HMAS Sydney, “The Vung Tau Ferry”, for its return journey to Australia with its escort, HMAS Yarra (III), shown here.

[1] HMAS Yarra (DE 45) Yarra was laid down by the Williamstown Naval Dockyard at Melbourne, Victoria on 9 April 1957. An enhanced derivative of the Royal Navy's Type 12 frigate, Yarra was one of four ships constructed to provide an anti-submarine warfare capability for the RAN. She was launched on 30 September 1958 by Lady McBride, wife of the Minister for Defence and commissioned into the RAN on 27 July 1961.

When 5 RAR (both tours of duty) was being transported on the 'Vung Tau Ferry' her escorts were:

♦ April 1966 from Australia to Vung Tau: HMAS Melbourne, HMAS Vampire and HMAS Yarra.

♦ April-May 1967 from Vung Tau to Sydney: HMAS Vampire.

♦ February 1969 Fremantle to Vung Tau: HMAS Derwent.

♦ February-March 1970 from Vung Tau to Sydney: HMAS Yarra.
