Aircraft Carrier Hmas Melbourne escorting HMAS Sydney with C Company 5RAR aboard 1966

HMAS Melbourne May 1966

HMAS Melbourne (R21) was a Majestic-class light aircraft carrier operated by the Royal Australian Navy (RAN) from 1955 until 1982, and was the third and final conventional aircraft carrier to serve in the RAN.
HMAS Melbourne is shown approaching the "Vung Tau Ferry" HMAS Sydney, in late April 1966.
Along with HMAS Vampire, HMAS Anzac and HMAS Supply, the Melbourne was escorting HMAS Sydney, loaded with 5RAR men and equipment for South Vietnam.
At most times the Melbourne was in sight, but not in close proximity, and this steam past gave the men a chance to get a good view of the pride of the fleet.
When 5 RAR (both tours of duty) was being transported on the 'Vung Tau Ferry' her escorts were:

♦ April 1966 from Australia to Vung Tau: HMAS Melbourne, HMAS Vampire and HMAS Yarra.

♦ April-May 1967 from Vung Tau to Sydney: HMAS Vampire.

♦ February 1969 Fremantle to Vung Tau: HMAS Derwent.

♦ February-March 1970 from Vung Tau to Sydney: HMAS Yarra
