DHC-4 Caribou Aircraft

Affectionately known as "Wallaby Airlines" by the Diggers, these twin engine STOL (Short Take Off and Landing) were flown by pilots from No. 35 Squadron.  The aircraft could lift off and land within 100 metres. No runway was required, as long as it was reasonably flat the RAAF pilots could land these aircraft just about anywhere. They where used in ferrying stores and taking troops on operations.
Based at Vung Tau, it was the first RAAF unit to serve in Vietnam and the last to withdraw in 1972.
Its main operational role was tactical air transport in support of the Australian Army both in Australia and Vietnam. It had three flight crew and was capable of carrying 32 troops.
During their Vietnam service, these Caribous carried more than 700,000 passengers and 41,300 tonnes of freight while logging 79,739 sorties and 47,000 flying hours.
