Lieutenant John Curtis Hartley.

Citation accompanying the award of Mentioned in Dispatches to Lt. Hartley. (twice mentioned)
During his tour of duty in South Vietnam in 1966 and 1967. Lieutenant John Hartley has been engaged continuously on operational tasks as a Platoon commander.

His platoon has been involved in a total of twenty two contacts with the Viet Cong and has been credited with seven enemy killed in action and nine enemy wounded in action. Also in the course of one of these actions, Lieutenant Hartley was wounded in the foot but remained on duty until ordered out for treatment.
In particular, during the period 26 January 1967 to 28 January 1967. Lieutenant Hartley's Platoon bore the brunt of three contacts with strong Viet Cong patrols. In each contact, his quick appraisal of the situation and rapid reactions enabled him to seize the initiative and force the enemy to withdraw. At all times he showed complete disregard for his own safety by moving around his platoon. directing fire, gaining information and steadying his troops. On two occasions he personally led cut off forces out to seek the Viet Cong and was in the process of taking the third when ordered to stay fast.
The cool courage, superb aggressive leadership and example of this officer have been an inspiration to all ranks privileged to serve with him.
