Vietnam Vanguard
The book will be officially launched on Monday, 2nd March 2020 following the 5RAR Association’s AGM which will be conducted during the Battalion’s forthcoming 55th Anniversary reunion.

Attendance at the AGM is restricted to members of 5RAR Association, but the book launch which follows will be open to anyone wishing to attend. The launch should commence at 1100 hours and take about 30 to 45 minutes. The venue will be the Visions Room of the Twin Towns Resort in Wharf Street, Tweed Heads, NSW, 2485. Phone 1800 015 015.

Major General Stuart Smith AO, DSC (Retd) has kindly agreed to launch the book. His father, Bernie Smith, served as a section commander in 5RAR throughout the Battalion’s first tour of Vietnam and, during its second tour, he was a platoon sergeant when killed in action on 9th March 1969.
The book will be of 430 pages. It contains 17 maps with legends and three diagrams, all rendered in full colour, together with 44 photographs in both colour and black and white.

As a publisher of historical works, the ANU Press sees our book as an important addition to the history of Australia’s involvement in the Vietnam War, recorded via the considered reflections of a bevy of people who were participants in the Army’s suddenly quadrupled military commitment to Vietnam in 1966. In so doing, it also showcases that era of the Battalion’s history. The publisher’s view appears to be that the book serves all these purposes admirably and they are very happy to add it to their impressive stable of military history publications.

Ron Boxall, Bob O’Neill and Roger Wainwright.
