The ubiquitous Bell HU-1 "Huey" helicopter

Bell UH-1 Iroquois Helicopter Nicknamed "Huey"

Soldiers of Charlie Company 5RAR are seen here being "choppered" into battle. This photograph was taken by Neil Ordner from his seat during the battalion's 1st tour.
The Iroquois helicopter was the lifeline of the Vietnam war. Not only were they air transport carrying Diggers to and from their areas of operations but also carried in food, water and supplies.
The 'Dustoff' Iroquois was the reason why the death toll was not higher during the war as it could quickly load a wounded soldier (or soldiers) in Phuoc Tuy province and transport him within minutes to the 1st Australian  Field Hospital or the American 36th Evacuation Hospital both located at Vung Tau.
Every Vietnam veteran will never forget the distinctive sound of the helicopter blades made a unique sound as they "whoked whoked whoked" as the rotors went slicing through the air.
