Arial view of the1st Australian Task Force Vietnam War

1st Australian Task Force (1ATF) 1969-70

This photograph is an aerial view of the 1st Australian Task Force looking towards the south-west. The hill named Nui Dat can be seen in the centre and Luscombe Field (airstrip) can be seen to the right of Nui Dat.
The 5th Battalion, during its first tour, was given the task of securing the area to enable the establishment of the 1st Australian Task Force. The battalion lines on both tours were in the 'rubber' to the north of the airstrip. (lower right-hand corner parallel to the air strip) with the exception of Delta Company who upon the completion of Operation Hardihood, mounted a defensive position on the western face of Nui Dat Hill (centre) and remained there until the SAS took over.
1 ATF was withdrawn in late 1971.
